Korean Chopsticks and Spoon, circa 1962-1964

[cstix19990304 - 1999/03/04]. Material: Steel (?). Description: A truly intriguing find, brought back from Korea sometime between 1962 and 1964. The chopsticks are small and slender (and therefore lightweight) of undecorated brushed steel; square from end to tip. The spoon has a more polished (nickel, chrome?) finish; a straight handle (solid, semicircular cross-section the entire length), and the bowl is partly frosted; decorated with some kind of written character inside. It is not certain if these are a matched set, however. Length: Chopsticks are 18 cm; Spoon is 20 cm x 4.5 cm. Source: Philadelphia, PA.

ROAD TRIP: CHICAGO!!!

I got to walk about town a bit on a business trip to the "windy city" this month. And wouldn't you know I managed to find several neat new additions. Here they are:

Palm wood chopsticks and rest

[cstix19990331a - 1999/03/31]. Material: Palm Wood. Description: Round and gently tapered the entire length. The tips are blunt and the opposite ends are rounded. The shape of the matching Palm wood rest is not merely unique, but also exhibits the unusual wood grain extremely well. Length: Chopsticks are 23.5 cm (Rest 5.5 cm). Source: Chicago, IL.

Green Ceramic Chopsticks Rest

[cstix19990331b - 1999/03/31]. Material: Ceramic. Description: The pleasing yellow and green glaze treatment on this angular ceramic piece gives the rustic impression of bronze patina. Length: 7 cm. Source: Chicago, IL.

Carnelian Chopsticks Rest

[cstix19990331c - 1999/03/31]. Material: Carnelian stone. Description: This small, royal / peacock blue stone chopstick rest is a simple rectangular piece of polished carved stone, with a gentle concave curvature. Length: 4.5 cm. Source: Chicago, IL.

Heavy Gauge Red Chopsticks

[cstix19990331d - 1999/03/31]. Material: Wood. Description: Of unusual note regarding these rounded square tapered chopsticks is their thickness. At the end, they are over a full centimeter diameter, and rather back-heavy. They are blood red and otherwise undecorated. Length: 23.5 cm. Nationality: Japanese. Source: Chicago, IL.

Cherry Twig Chopsticks

[cstix19990331e - 1999/03/31]. Material: Cherry Tree Twigs. Description: It is my understanding that these 'au naturale' chopsticks are made from twigs harvested from blossoming Cherry trees in the spring. They retain their smooth, shiny bark along part of the length, with the remaining tips and end stripped down to the bare wood. Length: 23 cm. Nationality: Japanese. Source: Chicago, IL.

Painted Chopsticks

[cstix19990331f - 1999/03/31]. Material: Wood. Description: Brown wood with hand-painted ends of mottled brown, red and black; brush strokes play an integral part in the design. Length: 23 cm. Nationality: Japanese Style. Source: Chicago, IL.
